How to obtain the background check in Canada?

Updated: Sep 24, 2022

A criminal record check (background check) determines if you have been charged or convicted of a crime in a particular country. The most common form of background check in Canada is the name-based check (more popular), but fingerprint-based checks are also available (for specific applications or if a name-based criminal record check does not provide a clear indication of your identity). Fingerprints are the most accurate way to verify a person's identity. As a result, individuals are unable to evade their criminal past and are protected from being falsely associated with criminal records.

For the name-based check, you can easily apply at the local police where you live (it could be online). This check is mainly conducted using your name and date of birth to check against the RCMP's Canadian Police Information Centre (CPIC) system and the result can usually be achieved on the same day.

For the fingerprints-based, you will have to apply in person at any RCMP-Accredited Fingerprinting Agency (such as Frontier One Inc.). Your fingerprints will be taken and submitted electronically to the RCMP's Canadian Criminal Real Time Identification Services (CCRTIS) by the fingerprinting agency. The RCMP will then do a search against the National Repository of Criminal Records to confirm if there is any criminal record that matches the individual’s fingerprints. Then, the result (police certificate) will be mailed back to you or any designated third party from the RCMP using regular mail by Canada Post within 2-4 weeks (no record) or up to 120 days (possible record match).

Along with your personal information (Name, Date of Birth, Address, etc.), you will also see if you have any criminal records from the CPIC or the CCRTIS on your police certificate. Your criminal records will be detailed on the certificate if they exist. Furthermore, fingerprints and photos may also appear on fingerprint-based police certificates (except for Privacy Act requests).
