Digital Fingerprinting Service

Updated: Sep 24, 2022

Digital fingerprinting is a process of capturing fingerprints digitally using the Livescan system – the RCMP-certified optical fingerprint scanner. This method is more convenient and modern than rolling fingers using actual ink and paper to collect fingerprints. Digital fingerprints are not only much better in quality, but they are also much easier to process and replace if there is a mistake during the capture process. As well, it is the only authorized method of capturing and submitting fingerprints to the RCMP's Canadian Criminal Real Time Identification Services (CCRTIS) for searches of the National Repository of Criminal Records.

Digital fingerprints are not only used to submit to the RCMP to obtain Canadian criminal record checks but they can also be printed on the FD-258 for FBI purposes and RCMP C216-C fingerprinting forms for obtaining criminal record checks in other countries (as long as they accept that RCMP’s fingerprinting form).

If you need a criminal record check in Canada or another country, digital fingerprinting is preferable to traditional ink fingerprinting. Ink fingerprinting should be used only if the requesting organization demands actual ink fingerprints or if they require special fingerprinting forms.

As you already know, the purpose of fingerprinting is to obtain a criminal record check. However, do you know why and when you need to get a background check? There are many different reasons for requesting a criminal record check, including but not limited to immigration, employment, pardons, adoptions, name changes, and visas.
